Book Editing Services Cost in 2026: What Authors Really Pay

Book editing prices vary widely, and most published price lists are unsourced. This guide uses one source: the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) 2026 rate chart, which reports median rate ranges from a survey of its members run from November 2025 to mid-January 2026. We multiply those per-word rates by a manuscript length so you can see what a budget looks like. These figures describe what freelance editors who answered the survey charge. They are not NeucitePress prices, and the EFA says it neither sets rates nor advises members on what to charge.
The four kinds of editing
- Developmental editing looks at structure, argument and organisation. It is the most substantial pass and usually comes first.
- Line editing works on sentences: clarity, flow, voice and word choice.
- Copyediting corrects grammar, punctuation, spelling and consistency, and applies a style guide.
- Proofreading is the last check of typeset pages for remaining errors.
Each pass is a separate piece of work, so the costs add up if you need more than one. Most manuscripts need some but not all of them.
What editors report charging in 2026
The table shows EFA median rate ranges in cents per word for selected categories. The EFA chart lists more categories, including children’s books, legal and technical work, and gives rates per hour and per page as well.

What that means for an 80,000-word book
To turn cents per word into a budget, multiply by the word count. For a nonfiction manuscript of 80,000 words, the EFA ranges work out as follows.

How category changes the cost
What moves the price
- Word count. Per-word pricing scales directly. A manuscript twice as long costs about twice as much for the same pass.
- Subject. The table above shows the pattern: medical and academic work are priced above fiction for the same pass.
- Condition of the draft. A rough draft takes more editorial time than a clean one. Ask the editor how they price this.
- Pricing basis. The EFA chart also gives hourly and per-page rates. For nonfiction developmental editing the hourly range is $57.50 to $70.00, and a page is counted as 250 words. A quote based on hours is harder to budget than one fixed by word count.
- Scope. Ask what is included: tracked changes, an editorial letter, a second look at revisions, a style sheet.
How to compare quotes
- Ask for the quote in writing, stating the word count, the type of editing and what is included.
- Ask for a sample edit of a short passage, so you can judge the feedback and its tone.
- Ask for references from authors in your field or genre.
- Check the style guide the editor works to and whether it matches your publisher or discipline.
- Be wary of guarantees. No editor can guarantee a publishing outcome or sales.
We do not quote percentage savings or discounts, because we found no reliable primary data for them. The practical way to reduce cost is to reduce the number of passes you need: settle the structure first, so that later passes handle language rather than rewriting.
Editing as part of a publishing package
If you are publishing an academic book, editing may be only one of several costs, alongside typesetting, an index, cover design and an ISBN. Questions authors ask
How much does it cost to edit a book?
For an 80,000-word nonfiction manuscript, EFA median rates imply roughly $3,200 to $4,000 for developmental editing, $2,400 to $3,200 for copyediting and $1,600 to $2,400 for proofreading. Fiction is lower and academic and medical work is higher.
Do I need all four kinds of editing?
Not always. Many manuscripts need structural work first, then a copyedit and a proofread. A manuscript whose structure is already settled may not need a developmental edit.
Is cheaper editing a warning sign?
Price alone does not tell you. A very low quote with no sample, no references and no written scope deserves questions. A high quote deserves the same questions.
Can I use software instead?
Grammar tools can catch some errors, but they do not replace a developmental edit or a human copyedit against a style guide.
