How to Fund Your Journal — APC, Diamond OA or Institutional

Overview

The journal runs on goodwill, a departmental budget line that nobody has examined, and an editor who does not count her hours. A commercial publisher has made an offer, or the current one has raised its fee, or the university wants to know why it is paying for something that brings in nothing. You need to decide how the journal will be funded for the next five years, and you need numbers.

Publishing Model & Sustainability Advisory is a decision study. We establish what the journal costs today in money and in people, model every funding route that is realistic for your field, region and volume, and recommend one. The recommendation comes with a five-year budget, the policy changes it requires, and the risks. If a commercial publisher is in the picture, we evaluate that option against self-publishing on equal terms.

It is for editors-in-chief, society boards, university publishing committees and research deans who own a journal and need to put it on a sustainable footing, or decide whether to hand it over.

• Options analysis — APC-funded, diamond open access with institutional or consortium funding, society-funded, subscription or hybrid, and publisher partnership, each tested for feasibility in your field and author base.
• Five-year cost and revenue model — a spreadsheet with assumptions you can change, covering each option and a base case.
• Publisher partnership assessment — if relevant, an analysis of the terms offered or currently in force: revenue share, rights, exit provisions, what you gain and what you give up.
• Recommendation report — the model we advise, why, what changes it requires (waivers, policies, governance), and the risks and mitigations.
• Presentation for decision-makers — a short deck and a two-page brief for a finance committee, society council or dean.

How It Works

1. We gather your current costs, volumes, author geography and any publisher agreements.
2. We build the baseline and confirm it with you.
3. We model the options and hold a working session with your leadership to test assumptions.
4. We deliver the recommendation, the model and the presentation materials, usually within five to six weeks.
5. Optional: we present to your committee or council and answer their questions.

What Stays With Your Editors

Funding models change how a journal is paid for, not what it publishes. Any recommendation we make preserves the separation between payment and editorial decisions. Your editors keep full authority over reviewer selection, editorial assessment and acceptance, and the APC or waiver status of an author never reaches them. NeucitePress advises on the model and, if engaged, runs the infrastructure; the decisions belong to you.

Important Limitations

• The model is built on the assumptions we agree with you. Projections are estimates, not guarantees of revenue.
• We do not negotiate with commercial publishers on your behalf unless separately engaged, and we do not receive fees from any publisher for recommending them.
• Whether funders, consortia or institutions will support a diamond model depends on their own decisions.
• Where a funding model is intended to support indexing, inclusion is decided solely by each database. NeucitePress prepares, remediates and submits but cannot sell inclusion.

Common Questions

Will you just recommend APCs?
No. APCs are the wrong answer for many journals, especially in fields or regions where authors cannot pay. We model what is realistic for your authors, and diamond and institutional models are often the recommendation.

A publisher has offered to take the journal. Should we accept?
Sometimes yes. The assessment sets the offer next to the cost of doing it yourself with the same quality, and pays particular attention to rights and exit terms so you can leave later if you need to.

Can you help us implement the recommendation?
Yes. The APC and waiver desk, platform, and production services are separate engagements, and the advisory fee is credited against them.
