FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about author requirements

Graduate students and trainees (residents, fellows) may contribute as co-authors when working with a senior faculty mentor who serves as corresponding author. Exceptional cases of independent contribution by advanced trainees are considered on a case-by-case basis with strong faculty endorsement.

We welcome international contributors and provide editorial support. Options include:

  • Professional copyediting services (additional fee may apply)
  • Collaboration with English-proficient co-authors
  • Use of professional translation/editing services before submission

The scientific content is most important—we can help polish the language.

We recommend 2-4 authors per chapter to ensure meaningful contributions. Each author must meet ICMJE authorship criteria: substantial contribution to conception, drafting/revision, final approval, and accountability. Contributor roles should be specified using CRediT taxonomy.

We understand research and clinical responsibilities can cause delays. Contact the Editor as early as possible if you anticipate difficulty meeting a deadline. Reasonable extensions are usually possible. However, significant delays may result in your chapter being moved to a subsequent edition or removed from the project.

Limited inclusion of your own previously published material is acceptable with proper citation and disclosure. You must have rights to republish (or obtain permission from copyright holder). Extensive overlap with existing publications is not acceptable. All content is screened for similarity.

Most institutions allow faculty to contribute to academic publications without special approval. However, some employers require disclosure or approval for outside activities. Check your institution's policies. Government employees and those with restrictive employment agreements should verify requirements.
