Do the Figures Match the Text?

Two different problems hide in figures, and reviewers usually catch neither.

The first is manipulation: the same image used twice with a different label, a band spliced in, a region cloned, or a figure that already appeared in the authors’ earlier paper. The second is simpler and far more common: the figure and the text do not agree. The group size in the caption is not the group size in the methods. The error bars are never defined. The p-value in panel B is not the p-value in the results.

We check both, plus the things that make a figure unusable in print: truncated axes, missing scale bars, colour choices no colour-blind reader can separate, and resolution too low to publish.
