Overview

Your institution publishes at a scale where “we will get back to you” is not an acceptable answer. You need uptime and response commitments in writing, your IT department wants single sign-on and server access, and you have more than one journal to think about. The Enterprise plan is a standalone, fully managed installation of Open Journal Systems (OJS), the free, open-source editorial platform from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), with contractual guarantees and the access your technical staff expect.

This plan is for university presses, learned societies and publishers running high-volume journals or a multi-journal portfolio.

What’s Included

• Unlimited submissions — no volume cap and no per-submission fee
• SSH and database access — read and, by agreement, write access for your technical staff
• Single sign-on — integration with your institutional identity provider (for example Shibboleth/SAML, OpenID Connect, LDAP)
• Service-level agreement — uptime target, incident response and resolution times, and service credits if we miss them
• Ongoing training — scheduled sessions through the year for new editors and staff, plus refresher training after major upgrades
• Named account contact — a single point of contact for planning, escalation and reporting
• Portfolio pricing — discount for ten or more journals on one agreement
• Free migration in — with an annual plan

How It Works

1. Scoping: we document your journals, volumes, identity provider, security requirements and reporting needs.
2. We agree the SLA terms, access model and training calendar in a written agreement.
3. We provision the installation, configure SSO and access, build themes and plugins, and migrate content where needed.
4. Go-live with training for all editorial and administrative staff.
5. We operate the platform under the SLA, with periodic service reviews. Pricing is per year, per installation, with a per-journal component and a portfolio discount at ten or more journals.

Platform Independence

OJS is free and open-source software. You keep your domain, your DOI prefix and full ownership of your data, and with SSH and database access you can verify that for yourself at any time. If you decide to bring the platform in-house, we support the transfer. Leave any time with everything.

Important Limitations

• Change control — server-level changes made by your staff outside an agreed change window may fall outside SLA coverage until reviewed.
• Custom development — new plugin or integration development beyond configuration is scoped and quoted separately.
• External fees — Crossref, preservation networks (CLOCKSS, Portico) and other third-party charges are separate and passed through at cost.

Common Questions

What does the SLA actually commit to?
A defined uptime target, response and resolution times by incident severity, and credits against the annual fee if we miss them. The exact figures are set out in the agreement.

Can we mix plan levels across a portfolio?
Yes. Smaller titles can sit on Basic or Professional under the same agreement; the portfolio discount applies across the whole set.

Can our IT team deploy their own changes?
Yes, within an agreed change-control process so that upgrades and the SLA remain intact.
