Article Enhancement — per article

Overview

The article is published, and that is where most journals stop. But a PDF alone is not how readers, funders and search engines now consume research. Article Enhancement adds the layers that increase reading, sharing and citation without changing the content the reviewers approved.

This is for journals on Open Journal Systems (OJS), the free, open-source software from PKP, or any other platform, that want their articles to compete with those from large publishers in visibility and usability.

What’s Included

Choose the options you need per article:

• Visual abstract — a designed one-panel summary of the article for the landing page and social media, approved by the author
• Embedded media — video, audio or interactive content embedded in the HTML version with accessible transcripts and captions
• Data and code links — persistent links to datasets, code repositories and protocols, with data availability statements formatted and DOIs verified
• HTML enrichment — interactive figures and tables, in-text reference pop-ups, expandable sections and download options in the HTML galley
• Structured metadata — schema.org and Highwire Press meta tags for search engines and Google Scholar, ORCID and funder identifiers, and Crossref metadata enrichment (references, licenses, funding)
• Plain-language summary — a short lay summary drafted from the article and approved by the author

How It Works

1. You select the enhancement options for the article or the issue.
2. We produce the assets and enrichments and send them to the author for approval where required.
3. We deploy them to the article page in OJS or deliver files for your platform.
4. We confirm that metadata is being picked up by the relevant services. Pricing is per article, with each option itemized on the rate card.

Important Limitations

• Content unchanged — enhancements are added around the published article; the text of record is not altered. Changes to the article itself go through Corrections, Retractions & Version Control.
• Author approval — visual abstracts and plain-language summaries require author sign-off, which can affect timing.
• Platform capability — some enrichments depend on the platform. On OJS, most are supported through the HTML galley and standard plugins; on other platforms we confirm feasibility first.
• External fees — Crossref metadata deposits use your journal’s account; any third-party charges are passed through at cost.

Common Questions

Does this improve indexing?
Structured metadata and enriched Crossref records make articles easier for indexes and discovery tools to process. Indexing decisions remain with each index.

Can we enhance old articles?
Yes. Retrofitting is priced per article; many journals start with their most-cited papers.

Do we need HTML galleys for this?
Most enhancements live in the HTML version. If you only publish PDFs, Article Typesetting produces HTML from the same source.
