Multilingual Production — per 500 words

Overview

Your journal publishes in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Turkish, Chinese or another language, and indexes want English metadata alongside. Or you publish bilingual articles and the layout, the metadata and the XML all have to carry both versions correctly. Multilingual Production handles the parts most production vendors get wrong.

This is for journals on Open Journal Systems (OJS), the free, open-source software from PKP, which supports multilingual metadata natively, and for journals on other platforms with the same need.

What’s Included

• Multilingual typesetting — articles laid out in the publication language(s), including right-to-left scripts, CJK typography, diacritics and language-appropriate hyphenation and punctuation
• Parallel metadata — title, abstract, keywords and author affiliations in each language, entered in OJS’s multilingual fields and carried into JATS XML with correct language tags
• Bilingual layouts — side-by-side or sequential presentation of two language versions within one article where the journal publishes that way
• Translation coordination — sourcing and managing qualified translators for abstracts, metadata or full text, with terminology consistency checks
• Standard outputs — PDF, HTML, JATS XML and accessible PDF, as in Article Typesetting
• Proof cycle — author proof in each language with queries

How It Works

1. You tell us the publication language(s) and which metadata is required in which language.
2. We typeset and enter the multilingual metadata; where translation is needed, we coordinate it.
3. Author proof and corrections.
4. Delivery to OJS or as a package. Pricing is per article for production, with translation coordination itemized per article or per word depending on scope.

Important Limitations

• Translation quality — we coordinate qualified translators and check consistency; the author or editor remains responsible for approving the scientific accuracy of any translation.
• Languages — we handle the major academic publishing languages routinely; for less common languages, we confirm capacity before quoting.
• Copyediting — language editing in the non-English language is quoted separately according to availability.
• External fees — translator fees are itemized and passed through at cost where we source them for you.

Common Questions

Do indexes require English metadata?
Most international indexes require at least an English title, abstract and keywords alongside the original. We make sure both are present and correctly tagged.

Can OJS display the site in two languages?
Yes. OJS supports multiple interface and submission languages. Configuration is part of managed hosting or can be done as a one-off task.

Can you produce a bilingual PDF from one manuscript?
Yes, provided both language versions are supplied or translation is commissioned.
