Editorial Board Renewal & Management
Overview
“Half our board was appointed at launch, three members have retired, and Scopus reviewers will look at the list before they look at anything else.” A credible, active, geographically and disciplinarily diverse board is checked by every major indexing database, and it is the first thing prospective authors examine. Building or renewing one is slow, and an unprofessional approach damages the journal’s reputation.
NeucitePress assesses your current board against your scope, identifies and vets candidates with verifiable publication records and affiliations, prepares the invitation materials and board member guidelines, runs a systematic outreach and follow-up campaign, and hands you a tracked shortlist of researchers who have said yes. You make the appointments.
Who this is for: new journals building a first board, established journals renewing after turnover, and journals preparing for a DOAJ, Scopus or Web of Science application.
What’s Included
- Board assessment — gap analysis of current composition against scope, with geographic, expertise, gender, career-stage and institution-type mapping
- Candidate identification and vetting — search of researcher databases, publication-record verification, affiliation check and screening for competing-journal conflicts, for up to 50 candidates
- Recruitment materials — invitation letter templates, board member guidelines (expectations, responsibilities, term limits), a journal information package and a response tracker
- Outreach — contact research, first- and second-wave invitations, scheduled follow-ups and answers to candidate questions
- Governance support — term structure, role descriptions and a renewal calendar so the board stays active after the campaign
How It Works
| Phase | Activities | Timeline |

What Stays With Your Editors
The journal’s editors keep final authority over reviewer selection, editorial assessment and acceptance, and over every board appointment. NeucitePress identifies and approaches candidates; the journal approves the shortlist, makes the appointments, obtains each member’s written consent to be listed, and confirms their affiliations before publishing the board page.
Important Limitations
- Candidates decide whether to join. Typical acceptance is 15–25 percent of those approached; NeucitePress cannot promise a number of appointments.
- Base fee covers identification and outreach to up to 50 candidates; additional candidates at $20 each. The active campaign runs 8 weeks; extensions at $299 per month.
- No stipends are offered to candidates; any honoraria are the journal’s decision and cost.
- Editor-in-chief searches require a more intensive process and are quoted separately.
Common Questions
What makes a good board member?
An active researcher with recent publications within the journal’s scope, a verifiable institutional affiliation, and willingness to review and advocate for the journal. We prioritize activity over titles.
How long until we have a full board?
Outreach completes in about 4 weeks and responses arrive over the following 4–8 weeks; plan for 2–3 months.
How does this help with indexing?
DOAJ, Scopus and Web of Science all evaluate board quality, diversity and international representation. The search is structured around those criteria. Inclusion is decided solely by each database; NeucitePress prepares, remediates and submits and cannot sell inclusion.
Every engagement can begin with the Journal Health Check.
