PMC JATS XML & DOAJ Metadata XML — per article

Overview

PubMed Central has approved your journal, or you are preparing the application, and the requirement is full-text JATS XML that passes their validation. Your PDFs are fine, but you have no XML, or the XML your platform generates fails the checker. This service produces compliant JATS XML for each article and handles the deposit.

This is for journals on Open Journal Systems (OJS) or another platform, with articles already published or in production. PubMed Central uses full-text JATS XML; DOAJ accepts article metadata through DOAJ Native XML, Crossref XML or its API. These are separate deliverables prepared to the selected destination’s requirements.

What’s Included

• JATS XML production — full-text conversion to the JATS Archiving and Interchange Tag Set (Green, current version), including front matter, body, back matter, references, tables, figures and math
• Validation — checks against the JATS DTD and PubMed Central’s style checker, with issues resolved before deposit
• Deposit packaging — file packages assembled to PMC’s specification (XML, PDF, figures, supplementary files) and submitted via the agreed route
• DOAJ metadata — article metadata uploaded to DOAJ through the API or XML upload
• Deposit report — confirmation of acceptance or a list of rejections with the fix applied

How It Works

1. You send the final published article files (or we take them from your OJS instance).
2. We produce and validate the JATS XML.
3. We assemble and submit the deposit package; we resolve any rejections.
4. You receive the XML files and a deposit report. Pricing is per article. No minimum order.

Important Limitations

• Index acceptance — we produce compliant XML and deposit it; we cannot guarantee that an index will accept a journal. Journal-level applications are a separate service.
• Source quality — XML reflects the published article. Errors in the source PDF are reproduced, not corrected, unless you commission a correction.
• Deposit routes — PMC deposit requires the journal to hold an agreement with PMC. We work within the route PMC assigns.
• External fees — none are charged by PMC or DOAJ for deposit. Any third-party charges are passed through at cost.

Common Questions

Do we need this if we already typeset with NeucitePress?
Article Typesetting includes JATS XML. This service is for articles produced elsewhere, or for back-file conversion and deposit.

Can you convert our back issues?
Yes, priced per article. Large archives can be scheduled as a project with a committed date.

Which JATS version?
The current version accepted by PMC, using the tagging conventions in their guidelines. We can produce other profiles on request.
