Overview

You want a journal website that works, a submission system that does not go down the week before an issue closes, and nobody on your team has time to patch a server. The Basic plan puts your journal on a NeucitePress-managed installation of Open Journal Systems (OJS), the free, open-source editorial platform from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). We run the infrastructure; your editors run the journal.

This plan is for a single journal receiving up to 150 submissions a year, hosted on a shared installation alongside other journals we manage. It is the right starting point for a new title, a society journal, or a university department that wants a professional, indexable home without a technical hire.

• Hosting and infrastructure — server capacity, monitoring, uptime management and SSL certificate on your own domain
• Security and upgrades — OJS core and security releases applied on our schedule, tested before rollout
• Backups — scheduled backups with retention, restorable on request
• Email deliverability — authenticated sending (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) so reviewer invitations reach inboxes rather than spam folders
• Hosted journal website — OJS reader-facing site with a content editor for pages, announcements and policies
• Article delivery — PDF and HTML article viewer, issue tables of contents, search
• Readership analytics — usage statistics for articles and issues
• Peer-review workflow — the complete OJS submission, review, copyediting and production workflow, with no per-submission fee
• Integrations — configuration of standard archiving, indexing and altmetrics plugins (for example PKP Preservation Network, Crossref, DOAJ export, Google Scholar metadata, ORCID)
• Email support — for editors and journal managers during business hours
• Free migration in — moving your existing journal and back issues from another host is included with an annual plan

How It Works

1. Tell us about the journal: domain, expected volume, current platform if any.
2. We provision the installation, configure your domain and SSL, and apply the standard integrations.
3. If you are moving from another host, we migrate content and metadata and verify it against the source.
4. Your editors receive login details and a short orientation guide; the journal goes live.
5. We maintain, back up and upgrade the platform for the term. Pricing is per journal, per year.

Platform Independence

OJS is free and open-source software. You retain your own domain and your own DOI prefix, and you can request a full export of your data (native XML, files and database) at any time. If you ever want to leave, you leave with everything.

Important Limitations

• Shared installation — themes are limited to standard OJS themes with color and logo customization; non-default plugins and custom code are not available on this tier. See the Professional plan if you need them.
• Volume cap — up to 150 submissions per year. If you exceed it consistently, we will suggest moving to Professional.
• Support scope — email support covers platform operation, not editorial decision-making or manuscript production.
• External fees — Crossref membership and DOI deposit fees, preservation network fees (CLOCKSS, Portico) and similar third-party charges are separate and passed through at cost.

Common Questions

Do we pay extra as submissions grow?
No. Within the plan cap, the peer-review workflow has no per-submission fee.

Can we use our own domain?
Yes. Your journal runs on a domain you own and control; we handle DNS guidance and SSL.

Who owns the content and data?
You do. Everything on the platform belongs to the journal and is exportable in full.
