Overview
“Our dean wants us in Web of Science. We have been publishing for three years and nobody can tell me whether we would pass.” Clarivate evaluates journals for the Web of Science Core Collection against 24 quality criteria and 4 impact criteria. Journals enter through the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and may later be moved to SCIE, SSCI or AHCI on the basis of the impact criteria. Clarivate gives no status updates during evaluation and imposes a waiting period after a rejection, so submitting before you are ready is costly.

What Stays With Your Editors
The journal’s editors keep final authority over reviewer selection, editorial assessment and acceptance, and the journal adopts the policy and board changes recommended. NeucitePress runs the assessment, preparation and submission process.
Important Limitations
- Inclusion is decided solely by Web of Science (Clarivate). NeucitePress prepares, remediates and submits; it cannot sell inclusion.
- The fee covers assessment, preparation and submission regardless of Clarivate’s decision.
- If the assessment shows the journal does not yet meet the criteria, NeucitePress recommends deferring the submission and gives you a dated roadmap rather than submitting an application likely to fail.
- NeucitePress has no relationship with or influence at Clarivate; the value is expertise in the published criteria.
- Clarivate’s review timeline and its post-rejection waiting period are outside NeucitePress’s control. Covers one journal.
Common Questions
What is the difference between ESCI and SCIE/SSCI/AHCI?
All Core Collection journals are first evaluated against the 24 quality criteria and enter ESCI. Those that also meet the four impact criteria are placed in, or later moved to, SCIE, SSCI or AHCI.
Should we apply to Scopus first?
Often, because Scopus decisions tend to arrive sooner. Neither database’s decision binds the other; the Path to Indexing program sequences both with an eligibility gate before each.
What if we are rejected?
Clarivate states the criteria not met and sets an embargo before resubmission. We analyze the decision and build the reapplication plan.
