Overview

Your journal has outgrown a generic template. You need a site that looks like yours, plugins that fit how your editors actually work, and a platform that will not slow down when submissions climb. The Professional plan gives your journal its own standalone OJS installation, managed end to end by NeucitePress, on Open Journal Systems, the free, open-source editorial platform from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP).

This plan is for an established journal receiving up to 500 submissions a year, or for a title with specific design, plugin or workflow requirements that a shared installation cannot accommodate.

What’s Included

• Everything in Basic — hosting, security, upgrades, backups, email deliverability, SSL, hosted journal website, PDF/HTML article viewer, readership analytics, standard archiving, indexing and altmetrics integrations, email support
• Standalone installation — your own OJS instance with dedicated resources, not shared with other journals
• Custom theme — a journal theme built to your branding, typography and layout requirements, maintained through upgrades
• Non-default plugins — installation and configuration of additional OJS plugins your workflow requires (for example, custom submission forms, reviewer recommendation tools, additional export formats)
• Initial training — live onboarding sessions for editors, section editors and journal managers, with recordings
• Peer-review workflow — the complete OJS workflow, no per-submission fee
• Free migration in — moving from another host is included with an annual plan

How It Works

1. Discovery call: we map your editorial workflow, branding and plugin needs.
2. We provision a standalone installation, build and review the custom theme with you, and configure the plugins.
3. If migrating, we transfer content, metadata, users and DOIs and verify the result against the source.
4. Your team completes initial training, and the journal goes live.
5. We maintain, back up and upgrade the instance for the term. Pricing is per journal, per year.

Platform Independence

OJS is free and open-source software. Your domain, your DOI prefix and your data remain yours. The custom theme is delivered as standard OJS theme code, so it travels with you. A full export is available whenever you ask, and you can leave any time with everything.

Important Limitations

• Volume cap — up to 500 submissions per year. Above that, see the Enterprise plan.
• No SSH or database access — server-level access is reserved for the Enterprise plan; we make server-side changes on your behalf.
• Plugin scope — we install and configure plugins from the OJS ecosystem; developing new plugins from scratch is quoted separately.
• External fees — Crossref, preservation networks (CLOCKSS, Portico) and other third-party charges are separate and passed through at cost.

Common Questions

What does “custom theme” cover?
A theme built around your logo, colors, typography and page structure, tested across devices and kept compatible through OJS upgrades. Extensive bespoke front-end development beyond the journal site is quoted separately.

Can we upgrade from Basic later?
Yes. We move your journal from the shared installation to a standalone one with no data loss and no downtime beyond a short maintenance window.

Is training included every year?
Initial training is included. Ongoing training for new staff is available on the Enterprise plan or as a separate service.
